Mounted Artillery Saber
(circa 1818-1830)

This is a massive saber with a curved blade that is about ¼" thick at the spine. It appears to be patterned after the British Light Cavalry saber, Pattern of 1796. It is much heaver; and has a brass hilt without langets. In most formations, non-commissioned and commissioned officers used these sabers exclusively because they were seen as a symbol of command. These swords were used during the Mexican War and some saw use as late as the Civil War, mainly with confederate forces.
