Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber
(Dated 1862)

Union Cavalry Soldier
with 1860 Cavalry Saber

This Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber was made by the Ames Manufacturing Company in 1862. The U.S. Army used this type of saber from about 1860 to the end of the Indian Wars in the early 1880s. The Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber was meant to replace the Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber. This new saber had a narrower blade that was much lighter than its predecessor. Soldiers on both sides used light cavalry sabers at Gettysburg and other Civil War engagements.

The Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts opened its doors in 1791. Ames turned out more swords in larger quantities than all other American makers combined. Their swords have seen service from obscure frontier Indian skirmishes to every famous battle fought by American military and Naval forces from the early 1800s to the great battle fields of Europe in the twentieth century.
